Videos: Pharmacist Lessons & Advice
Tracy Price BSP leads the team of pharmacists attending the basin. The Athabasca Health Facility is using BDM Pharmacy services. BDM is the province-wide integrated pharmacy computer platform used to process inpatient prescription orders. BDM improves patient safety, reduces risk of errors and allows a clinical check by a pharmacist on all medication orders. It produces the Transfer/Discharge Medication Reconciliation reports that meet Provincial and Accreditation Canada standards. Data entry is completed Monday to Friday both on site and off site.
Looking forward, Athabasca Health Authority and Pharmasave look to break new ground in the province by rolling out a platform using eHealth and Tele-Health services to allow patients in the entire basin to talk “live” face to face over a secure network. This new service will give patients more personal access to a pharmacist even when one is not in the basin.
What is a Pharmacist & What Can They Do For You?
Pharmacists are your medication experts! Once they receive a prescription from your nurse or doctor, they check that it is the right medication, that it is safe to take with your other medications, and that it is covered by your insurance before preparing and sending it to the Athabasca Basin. If you find that it is sometimes hard to remember to take your medications, they can organize them in to a blister pack for you.
A pharmacist from Pharmasave will be in the Athabasca Basin for 4 days each month and they are happy to answer any questions that you may have. Here are the examples of questions they can answer for you:
- Do I have any refills left?
- Can you refill & send my medication up?
- What is this pill for?
- Can you put my pills in blister packs?
You can also call them to setup a medications review the next time they are in the basin. A medication review allows the pharmacist to go through all of your medications with you and answer any questions or concerns you might have. They can tell you what each medication is for, how it works, what to expect when taking it, and the side effects to watch out for.
If you have any questions or want to set up a medication review, you can call Pharmasave in Prince Albert toll-free at 1-800-561-1119 and ask for the AHA Pharmacists: Tracy, Travis, Lindsey or Sara.
